Ethernet Product Family:

10G Electronic Dispersion Compensation

Increased bandwidth requirements are driving the transition to 10Gbps and higher data rates. Enterprise, storage and metro networks all see the need for this transition. Cost-effective and expedite transitions require the use of existing transmission medium as a “forklift replacement” of the medium is expensive. However, 10Gbps transmission over multimode fibers, single mode fibers, or FR4 backplanes results in significant signal degradation due to Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) introduced by the medium.

Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) uses advanced equalization techniques implemented in silicon to compensate for the signal degradation introduced by the transmission medium, enabling higher data rates and transmission over longer link distances on existing medium. EDC technology provides an effective scalable solution with low cost. EDC is an attractive alternative to more costly solutions such as fiber medium replacement, backplane replacement, expensive optics and optical compensation techniques, or use of new complex signaling and coding schemes.  See Table 1 for the EDC devices Cortina offers.
